Ticks in dogs: a hidden danger not to be underestimated! 🕷️🐶

Tiques chez le chien : un danger caché à ne pas sous-estimer ! 🕷️🐶

Our dogs love to explore nature, run in the grass, and roll around happily outside. But these moments of freedom can also expose them to a formidable enemy: ticks. These silent parasites can transmit serious diseases and must be taken very seriously.

In this article, we take a look at the dangers of ticks, how to protect your dog, and what to do in the event of a bite.

Why are ticks dangerous?

Ticks are not just harmless parasites. By attaching themselves to your dog's skin, they feed on its blood and can transmit serious diseases such as:

🔴 Piroplasmosis: A disease that destroys red blood cells and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Symptoms: fatigue, fever, dark urine.

🟠 Lyme disease: A bacterial infection that can cause fever, joint pain, and loss of energy.

⚠️ Other infections: Ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis… so many diseases that can seriously affect your companion’s health.

How to protect your dog from ticks?

Prevention is the best weapon against these parasites! Here are some effective solutions:

✅ Antiparasitics : Collars, pipettes , sprays, or tablets—there are several solutions for keeping ticks away. Ask your veterinarian for advice on choosing the most suitable one.

Brushing after every walk : Regularly run your hand through your dog's coat to detect the possible presence of a tick before it clings on for too long.

✅ Areas to watch : Ticks love warm, hidden places. Check the ears, neck, skin folds, between the toes, and under the belly.

What to do if you find a tick on your dog?

Don’t panic! Here are the steps to follow:

1️⃣ Get a tick hook (available at the pharmacy or veterinarian).

2️⃣ Slide the hook under the tick and turn gently without pulling, to avoid leaving the head in the skin.

3️⃣ Disinfect the area with a mild antiseptic.

4️⃣ Monitor your dog for a few days. If unusual symptoms appear (fever, fatigue, loss of appetite), consult a veterinarian immediately.

Absolutely avoid : Do not pull the tick off with your fingers, do not use alcohol or ether, this risks regurgitating the tick and increasing the risk of infection.

Ticks in winter, a false myth!

Contrary to popular belief, ticks do not disappear completely in winter. With global warming, they remain active for much of the year. Vigilance is therefore essential year-round, not just in spring and summer.

Bottom line: Stay vigilant for your dog's health!

✔️ Inspect your dog after each walk.

✔️ Use a suitable pest control product.

✔️ Promptly remove any ticks found.

✔️ Consult a veterinarian if you experience any suspicious symptoms.

Our companions deserve the best in protection . So, take care of them with love and vigilance! 💛🐕
